Roulette - past and present

A device very similar to the present-day roulette wheel was invented in the 17th century by scientist and mathematician Blaise Pascal, who was trying to create a perpetual motion machine, but the first references of a game of chance named Roulette appeared only in the 18th century. By the end of that century, Roulette was a very popular game in Paris and from that time we have a detailed description of the game in Jaques Lablee’s novel “La Roulette, ou le Jour” published in 1801. At that time, the only version of roulette was the one with two bank slots, 0 (colored in red) and 00 (black) which, in the early 1800s, were colored in green to avoid confusion. In 1843, in an attempt to attract more players, François and Louis Blanc introduced for the first time, in the casino town of Bad Homburg in Germany, the Single Zero version of roulette. In the 1860, when gambling was abolished in Germany, they took their game to Monte Carlo, where it was established as the premier game ever since, and that’s how the modern version of European Roulette came to be. On the other side of the Atlantic, in the United States of America, the Double Zero variation had already spread throughout the country, starting from New Orleans and going westward up the Mississippi River, and it eventually evolved in the current American Roulette version.

Since the 1970s, casinos started to spread around the world and today there are several hundred casinos offering roulette games around the world. But online casinos such as the Amber Casino have pushed the popularity of the game even further, enabling players throughout the world to play it from the comfort of their home, at any time of the day or night, for smaller stakes or even for free. The most recent development is mobile online gambling, which allows users to play their favorite casino game from virtually anywhere there is an internet collection.

French, American or European?

While all these versions of Roulette are entertaining and offer the same great gaming sensation, there are some differences between them.
The French Roulette version offers specific types of bets such as neighbor bets (select a number and its neighbors on the wheel) and announce bets (Finales, Tiers du cylinder, Orphelins) - for further details about these bets please read the “Online French Roulette” article in our “Casino Games” section.
However, the European and American variations are the most popular. Like we mentioned earlier, the biggest difference between these is that in American Roulette features the 00 (Double Zero), which increases the house edge from 2.70% (for European Roulette) to 5.26%. And this is the reason most roulette players choose the European Roulette. Moreover, some online casinos offer European Roulette with the so-called “En Prison” rule which further decreases the house edge to 1.35%. This rule applies to even bets (1:1 payout ratio, such as Red/Black) and through it you are able to keep your bet if the ball lands on 0 and carry it to the next spin, and if you win your bet is refunded. For example, if you bet $20 on Black and the ball lands on 0, your bet goes “In prison” for the next spin. If the ball lands on Black at this next spin, your bet is “released from prison” back to you, but without any other payouts. In conclusion, we recommend that you always play European Roulette in order to increase your chances of winning.
