Blackjack Rules

Blackjack (also known as Twenty-one) is a very popular casino game, one of the few in which the player’s gambling skills can influence the outcome. The objective of the game is to beat the dealer by getting your hand value as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. The ideal situation is, of course, when your cards add exactly to 21; if you achieve this by using an ace and a figure card or a 10, this is called “Blackjack”. The suit of the cards has no relevance in Blackjack, except for the case in which you hold the Ace and Jack of spades, for which some casinos like the Party Casino offer a special bonus. Aces can count as 1 or 11, the figure cards (Jack, Queen and King) always have the value 10, and the rest of the cards (2-10) have their face value.

The game starts with the player placing his bet. Then he receives two cards face up and the dealer also receives two cards but only the first one is shown, as the second one is face down and will only be revealed after the player finishes his turn. The dealer must take cards until his total amounts to 17 or more. Each game has a few possible outcomes:

  • The player loses automatically if his hand exceeds twenty-one and the game ends.
  • If your hand value is greater than that of the dealer, you have won and you will receive the same amount that you have bet (1:1 ratio).
  • If your hand value is equal to that of the dealer’s, the game ends in a tie (push) and you will receive your bet back.
  • If you receive an ace and any ten-valued card (Blackjack), you automatically win the game and you will receive a 3:2 payout ratio compared to the usual 1:1. If the dealer also receives a Blackjack, the hand is a push.

The Player’s options

Hitting / Standing
These are the most common decisions during a game of Blackjack. To “hit” means to draw another card and by “standing” you indicate that you don’t want to receive any more cards.

Surrender
When this option is available, you can use it to fold your hand if you are not satisfied with the cards you have received and you consider that your chances of winning that game are very low. After you have used this option you can reclaim half of your bet.

Double
Use this option when you are confident that you will win the hand. You can double your original bet but you will receive only one additional card next to your first two.

Splitting
You may split the two cards you were dealt into two separate hands if those cards have the same value (this includes the figure cards, which are all considered as having the value 10). You will have to place a second bet, equal to the original bet, if you choose to split your hand. For each of these hands you can draw as many cards as you like, except when your original cards are Aces, in which case you will receive only one additional card next to each Ace.

Insurance
If the dealer’s face up card is an Ace, you have the option to buy an insurance against a possible Blackjack by placing on the table an additional amount equal to half your bet. If the dealer does eventually makes a Blackjack, you will be paid 2 to 1 on your insurance, so you will not lose any money during that round. However, you will lose the insurance amount if the dealer doesn’t have Blackjack.

Please take into consideration that all the rules and player options we have described above are general, commonly used in online casinos, but some casinos can have additional rules or options, while others don’t offer all of the above. Read carefully the terms and conditions of service, as well as the Blackjack rules that apply at the casino you have chosen.
With the hope that you have found this article helpful, we wish you the best of luck in your future Blackjack games!
