American Roulette is different from European and French Roulette, as it contains an extra number - double zero (double zéro) - and the arrangement of numbers is different too. American Roulette tables are smaller than European tables and the announcements are made in French instead of English.

Apart from that, winning numbers are marked by a little figure called “Dolly”, which you will not see on European tables either. Even though American Roulette is not very common, it is offered in various online casinos such as the Ladbrokes Casino. If you follow one of our links now, you can claim a special bonus, which we have negotiated for you. The wheel and table layout

As with all other variations of Roulette, there is a wheel and a table layout. The wheel contains 38 slots, colored in black, red and green. Numbers 1 to 36 (arranged in a non-sequential order) are alternatively colored black and red and the two green slots feature the numbers 0 (Zero) and 00 (Double Zero). The table layout is divided in two sections that also indicate the two large categories of bets one can place at American Roulette. The inner section (inside bets are placed here) displays the 38 numbers on 3 columns of 3 numbers each, with the 0 and 00 on top of the columns, right next to the wheel. The outside section consists of different betting areas labeled as: odds, even, red, black, high (19-36), low (1-18), 1st, 2nd and 3rd dozens, and the “2 to1” columns.

If you ever played American Roulette in a brick-and-mortar casino, you will not have any problems playing it online, as the rules, odds and payouts are exactly the same. For those of you who are not familiar with American Roulette yet, here’s how the game goes. Select from the different chip denominations the one you want, and then click on the table to place your bet (Make your bets). After you have placed your bets, click on the “Spin” button and wait for the outcome. After the spin is completed and all bets are settled, you will have the option to repeat your previous bets or you can clear all bets and start fresh.

Betting Options and Payouts

There are many ways you can win money at American Roulette: by predicting the exact number that the ball will land on, or by selecting a group of numbers, the colour of the slot, whether the number is odd/even or high/low etc. Because of the extra number (double zero) on American Roulette wheels, you will also find a couple of bets that can only be placed in the American version of the game:

  • Three Bet: here the player bets on three neighboring numbers like 0/1/2 or 00/2/3. If the ball ends up in one of the predicted number pockets, the payout is 6:1.
  • Five Number Bet or Top Line: the bet is on the first five numbers (00/0/1/2/3) and the payout is 11:1.

American Roulette

Other than that, all bets and payouts are the same as in European Roulette, and you can find details about them by visiting our Online European Roulette article.

If the ball drops into the 0 or 00-pocket:

  • bets on zero (including combination bets containing 0 or 00) win
  • multiple bets loose
  • single bets are completely removed from the table by the croupier in American casinos, whereas only half the betting amount is swept away in European casinos.

Please note that as soon as half of the bet remains on the table, the “en prison” rule applies in European casinos. Read more about the “en prison” rule in our French Roulette article.

The Martingale System

Over the years, many have tried to beat the odds and break the bank at Roulette. Some, like Joseph Jagger, even succeeded but these situations occur only when there is a biased roulette wheel involved (a wheel which, due to some mechanical defect, allows some particular numbers to win more often that random probability dictates). But the truth is the House always plays with better odds and there is no proven mathematical system that can beat the Roulette.
Grosvenor However, there are some systems that the players have had some success with, one of which is the well-known Martingale System, often used not only for Roulette but for other types of gambling such as sports betting. Basically, Martingale is a system that relies on the assumption that losing streaks don’t last long. In Roulette’s case, Martingale applies to even bets, such as Red/Black, Odd/Even or High/Low which can only have two possible outcomes - win or lose and you play with odds close to 50% (not exactly 50-50 because of the 0 and 00 numbers). The system consists in doubling the bet in case of a loss and return to the initial bet after a win. Here is an example on how this system works: let’s say you start with a bet of $5 on Red, and therefore a potential $5 win. If you lose, your next bet should be $10 on Red also and if Black comes up again, bet $20 on Red again for the next spin and so on. Whenever Red comes up, you win all your money back plus the initial $5 from the original bet. Be careful when you use Martingale, since it is a progressive system, and if you run into a long losing streak, the bets you’ll have to make will get bigger and bigger. Also take into account that online casinos have wagering limits and so, even if you have a very high budget, you will not be able to place higher bets than the house limits.
