Roulette is one of the most preferred casino games and it’s not that difficult to understand why. The game is pretty easy to play and it also offers various betting options, both for serious players and also for those who just want a quick betting thrill. If you are just starting to play Roulette, it’s best to keep things simple. Choose the straight up bet (place a bet on a single number) or even bets (bets with a 1:1 pay ratio such as Black/Red, Odd/Even, High/Low). In time, you will develop your own betting system, but keep in mind that each spin produces random results and there is no roulette betting system that can beat the house. Using favorite numbers is a strategy as good as any, as long as you enjoy the game.

European Roulette is a very popular version (perhaps the most popular), featuring 36 numbers (1 through 36, alternatively colored red and black) and the number zero (green), which brings the house edge to only 2.70%, compared to 5.26% for American Roulette. Therefore, most professional gamblers choose European Roulette. The difference between European and French variations is the layout of the table (in French Roulette the table layout has a different arrangement and the various betting options displayed on the table are in French) and the fact that in French Roulette there are some extra type of rules available such as “Le partage” (if the number Zero comes up you receive half your bet back instead of losing it completely) and also some special bets (“call bets”) that you can’t find at the European version: Voisins, Voisins de Zero, Jeu 0, Tiers du Cylindre, Orphelins - for detailed information about these bets please read the “Online French Roulette” article.

Betting Types and Payouts

Inside bets refer to those bets that are made on a specific number or group of numbers (bets made “inside” the table)

  1. Straight Up: a bet on a single number, made by placing your chips in the middle of that number. The payout is 35:1.
  2. Split Bet: bet on two neighboring numbers, vertically or horizontally, by placing your chips on the line that separates them for a 17:1 payout.
  3. Street Bet: place the chips on the lower edge of the board, at the end of a vertical 3 number line for an 11 to 1 return on your bet.
  4. Corner Bet: bet on 4 numbers simultaneously by placing the chips at the cross where the four numbers meet. If any of these numbers is the winner you will receive 8 times the wagered amount.
  5. Four Bet: select 0, 1, 2 and 3 in a single move by placing your chips on the lower left corner of the betting table, at the end of the line between 0 and the first row (8:1 payout).
  6. Line Bet: this type of bet allows you to select two neighboring streets if you place the chips on the lower edge of the table in the point where the two streets meet (pays 5:1).

Outside bets include the bets that are made on specific groups of numbers, without indicating a particular number (the chips are placed on special boxes “outside” the numbers area):

  1. Column Bet: bet on all the numbers from each of the three columns, by placing your chips at the right side of the table, in one of the boxes labeled “2 to1” (representing the payout).
  2. Dozen Bet: on the table there are three boxes marked “1st 12”, “2nd 12” and “3rd 12”. By placing your chips in one of these boxes, you will bet that the winning number is in the respective dozen for a 2:1 payout.
  3. Red/Black Bet: an even bet, paying 1:1, on the outcome of the color. Choose red or black and keep your fingers crossed.
  4. Even/Odd Bet: same 1:1 payout, but here you choose if the winning number is odd or even.
  5. Low/High Bet: the 36 numbers are divided into two groups - Low (numbers 1 to 18) and High (numbers 19 to 36). It’s up to you to choose the winning side and double your bet.

If you want to play European Roulette, be careful where you do so. Some casinos have the “En Prison” rule, according to which if the number Zero comes up after you have placed even bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even, and High/Low), you have the option to put your bet “in prison” and wait for another spin. If in the next spin the ball lands on Zero again, you lose your bet, but if it instead it lands on a number included in your initial selection, you can take your bet back (but no further payouts are made). So, basically this rule gives you a chance not to lose any money if you had the bad luck of spinning a Zero.
