The Austrian Bookmakers Association
The Austrian Bookmakers Association was founded in 1994. Its purpose is to preserve the interests of all bookmakers, to represent the members of the gambling industry and to avoid illegal gambling. Another task of the Austrian Bookmakers Association is to create, maintain and expand some basic principles for the legal protection of the industry in order to protect its members. The Association does not pursue profitability; it is politically and confessionally neutral.
The Austrian Bookmakers Association was founded in 1994 following an initiative of four businessmen who had recognized the importance of establishing regulations within the bookmaking industry. The Austrian Bookmakers Association is independent and acts as a representative of the bookmaker’s profession.
The Association was significantly involved in the discussion about several federal state laws in Austria that are connected to the bookmaking industry and has engaged in the debate whether or not to change the gambling laws. According to the Association, betting with bookmakers should be distinguished from all other forms of gambling. In addition to that, the Austrian Bookmakers Association has supported multiple Europe-wide campaigns in order to prevent a European Union Directive that would have caused financial penalties for various bookmakers. In the course of that the FEBA (Federation of European Bookmakers Association), which is a Europe-wide community of interests, was founded. Furthermore, the Austrian Bookmakers Association was engaged in numerous other laws concerning bookmakers.
In cooperation with the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber in Vienna (Wirtschaftskammer Wien), the Austrian Bookmakers Association organizes an annual bookmaker’s academy (Buchmacherakademie) which educates bookmakers.
All members of the Association are obliged to consider specified betting regulations that have been worked out after long and distinct discussions. You can download the entire terms and conditions of the Austrian Bookmakers Association from the website of the Association.

In the year of 1999 the Association appointed two committees: the “Wettbestimmungskommission” (committee for betting regulations) and the “Schiedsgerichtskommission” (arbitration committee).
The “Wettbestimmmungkommission” consisted of several bookmakers who were responsible for the revision of the betting regulations and for keeping them up-to-date. The “Schiedsgerichtskommission” on the other hand was founded in order to help Austrian Bookmakers when conflicts occur.
