What is GamCare?

GamCare is a registered charity in the UK that offers advice, counselling and practical help for people suffering from compulsive gambling. GamCare strives to make people aware of the social impact of gambling and to promote a sensible, responsible attitude towards it. The organisation offers counselling for problem gamblers via a national telephone helpline as well as face-to-face and online counselling.

Online Support – NetLine

“NetLine” is an internet-based counselling service where anyone affected by a gambling problem can talk to professionally trained advisors. NetLine is not only for the problem gamblers themselves but also for friends and family or anyone who seeks advice on the subject. Before the conversation begins, you are asked to choose an alias; you do not have to give your real name or any other personal data. The conversation takes place in a separate, closed “room,” so everything can be kept confidential. After the conversation, the advisor may provide you with a web page containing information that is relevant to your individual problem. The page can only be seen by the caller and will remain accessible. It can, of course, be bookmarked or printed.

For training and supervision purposes, transcripts of conversations are recorded but they, of course, remain within the GamCare team as well and are not individually identifiable. If you do not want your call to be recorded, you can request this by checking the appropriate box when entering your alias.

Online Support – Forum and Chat

GamCare’s web page also features a forum with useful links, questions and answers as well as a chat-room. In the chat-room, GamCare advisors are available every day (except Saturday) – consult the website to see the time schedule. On its web page, GamCare offers a form with questions that allows you to find out if you are a problem gambler or if you are at risk of becoming one. GamCare also provides professional counselling on the phone. By calling 0845 6000 133, problem gamblers, their families, spouses and friends can talk to GamCare advisors from 08:00 am to midnight, seven days a week.

GamCare provides face-to-face counseling for individuals, couples and groups throughout the UK and works with local counselling partners in a number of towns and cities. • Maybe ask someone you can trust to manage your money for you for an agreed period of time
  • Avoid locations where you used to gamble, especially when on your own
  • Take one step at a time and be patient; don’t expect your problems to disappear within a day
  • If you feel the need to gamble, talk to someone about it
  • Think positively, even when things get hard
  • Get professional help and support
