What is the National Council on Problem Gambling?

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) is an organization that provides and arranges programs and services that help pathological gamblers, their families and friends throughout the USA. NCPG strives to increase public awareness of the problem, to make sure that treatment for gamblers and their families is available in many US states and to encourage research on the subject. The National Council on Problem Gambling is neither a supporter nor an opponent of legalized gambling; its only objective is to help problem gamblers. The major programs and services of the NCPG include:

The National Problem Gambling Helpline Network: 800-522-4700
The hotline is a national access point to services offered in the USA. NCPG advisors are available 24 hours a day and everything you say will, of course, be kept confidential. The organization of the annual National Conference on the Prevention, Treatment, Research and Recovery of Problem Gambling, which is the oldest and largest conference on the subject in the world

The National Council on Problem Gambling functions as an intermediary between people seeking help and the organizations offering advice and therapy for problem gamblers. The NCPG’s web page features a list of problem gambling resources in several states (see “Help by state”).

Find the best treatment facility

Victor Chandler-Sign up here! The NCPG also offers advice on how to find the best inpatient treatment facility for you or one of your loved ones suffering from pathological gambling. There is no single treatment that is appropriate for all patients and therefore it is very important to choose carefully and to investigate all the available options. On the NCPG web page, you can find a list of 12 questions you should ask yourself in order to choose the appropriate gambling treatment program. The page also recommends residential and inpatient treatment programs and services. Under “Counselor Search,” you can access a database where counselors who have applied for national certification and who meet the NCGC (National Certified Gambling Counselor - Level I and II) standards for certification, are listed.

Problem Gambling

The NCPG’s web page also features general information about problem gambling and pathological gambling as well as a questionnaire of 10 questions that help you find out if you are or are prone to becoming a problem gambler. In the FAQ section of the homepage, you can find answers to questions surrounding the problem of compulsive gambling.

Real Voices

A very interesting and touching feature of the homepage is the section called “Real Voices,” where individuals – problem gamblers, as well as friends and relatives of problem gamblers – tell their stories. These stories provide more insight into the problem than any statistics; everyone who would like to submit their “Real Voice” story can do so by contacting NCPG at 202-547-9204 or

Useful Links and Literature

On NCPG website you can also find many useful links to organizations throughout the US as well as an online store where you can order literature on the subject of problem gambling. The web page also features press releases and news in addition to free materials to promote public awareness of problem gambling.
